Skiing At Lake Tahoe

If you’re here during the winter months, we’re sure you’re interested in skiing. And you’ve come to the right place ! - since Lake Tahoe has California’s/Nevada’s most extensive and best skiing. The area features numerous mountains, catering to all levels from absolute beginner up to the most adventurous downhill racer. You don’t have to go far either... Incline Village features two excellent resorts, each with it’s own unique character: Diamond Peak caters to family skiing and has plenty for all levels. Mount Rose is probably more suitable for the hard-core skier with some particularly challenging black runs. Its higher altitude can also make it particularly challenging when the sun isn’t shining.

The most well known Tahoe mountains - Squaw Valley, Northstar and Heavenly - offer extensive runs; fast lifts and, of course, crowds of Bay Area residents with whom you can socialize while waiting in the long lift lines !

Kirkwood and Alpine Meadows offer great skiing and are perhaps less crowded. Boreal and Sugar bowl are best known as meccas for the Bay Area’s snowboarders. Homewood and Tahoe Donner are best suited to absolute beginners but are much smaller and limited in scope.

Nordic skiing is available at the specialist Tahoe XC and Royal Gorge ski areas. Tahoe Donner offers both Alpine and Nordic skiing.

Click on the links to the left for complete information direct from each resort. Check out the map below (Courtesy of tahoeguide.com) to see where each resort is located. Clicking on the map will take you to the Tahoe Guide website.

Need to Rent Equipment ?

You can rent equipment by the day at all of the resorts. If you plan to visit several resorts during your stay, you may find it more convenient to rent for a longer period from one of the many equipment rental shops located around the lake. We’ve listed a few convenient ones in the column to the left.

Other Fun Winter Activities to Consider...

There are several locations that offer tobogganing, sledding and tubing. These are slopes where you and your kids can have hours of  free fun. The top of Mount Rose Hwy is the closest.

What about a snowmobile adventure ? You can book these in advance. Lake Tahoe Snowmobile Tours is just one company offering guided tours. See column to the left for links to additional options.
